WHO is the acronym for the World Health Organization.  The WHO is an agency of the United Nations that is responsible for coordinating international health initiatives, such as eradication of diseases and the prevention of epidemics.

How It's Used

“WHO recommends aggressive SARS testing in what it calls the ‘zone of re-emergence’ where the virus first appeared, including southern China and possibly Hong Kong."

—Leslie Chang, “China Is Urged to Watch Risk Groups for SARS,” The Wall Street Journal, October 27, 2003, p. A17.
