The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World

There have been frequent attempts over the years to develop additional lists of seven wonders:

“The problem is that none of these places quite has the allure of Machu Picchu [8] (voted one of the seven wonders of the world in a privately organised poll in 2007). Governments have talked about developing new tourist destinations for decades. But away from Cusco and Lima, hotels and other facilities are often limited. Tour companies reported many cancellations this month.”—no author listed, “Ruined,” The Economist, February 13, 2010.

How It's Used

"'I try to spend one day a week in stores,' [Karal Ann Marling, a professor of art history and American studies at the University of Minnesota] says of her life in Minneapolis, 'and that's where I hone my visual skills. I get the same satisfaction from the Walker Art Center that I get from the Mall of America'—in her opinion one of the wonders of the nonancient (sic) world."

Deborah Solomon, "In Praise of Bad Art: With Norman Rockwell this year's art-world darling, a critic tells us why Picasso has given way to calendar art," The New York Times Magazine, January 24, 1999, p. 34.

"At Alexandria, the city known as the 'Pearl of the Mediterranean', a whole range of excursions may be taken. You can see the Citadel of Qaitbay, a 15th-century Mamluk fortress built on the foundations of the Pharaos, or Lighthouse, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Then there's the recently discovered Roman theatre and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, one of the country's foremost cultural centres."
