  4. Honor thy father and mother

  8. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor
  9. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s house
  10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife

How It's Used

"Last week I had this crazy dream.  There he was, the Prince of Egypt, descending from Sinai hoisting tablets inscribed:

  • No guns.
  • No helicopters.
  • No explosives.
  • No hero cops.
  • No treacly (sic) soundtracks.
  • No terminal diseases.
  • No remakes.
  • No earsplitting decibel levels.
  • No sixtyish heroes with twenty-something love interests.
  • No films longer than 100 minutes.

"My dream of a new Ten Commandments for moviemakers?  Hollywood could do worse than adopt these resolutions for 1999."

—Carrie Rickey, "Be it resolved:  Film formulas to scrap in '99," The Philadelphia Inquirer, January 1, 1999, Weekend Section, p. 3.

"There is a teaching in the Talmud that says an individual who comes before God after death will be asked a series of questions, the first one of which is, 'Were you honest in your business dealings?' But it is the Ten Commandments that have weighed most heavily on the mind of Rabbi David Wolpe of Sinai Temple in Los Angeles in light of the sins for which Bernard L. Madoff stands accused."

Robin Pogrebin, "In Madoff Scandal, Jews Feel an Acute Betrayal," The New York Times, December 23, 2008.
