The Square Deal

"The Square Deal" referred to a series of President Theodore Roosevelt’s proposals that would help guide national economic development.  These proposals included trust busting, consumer legislation (the Pure Food and Drug Law of 1906 and the Meat Inspection Act of 1906), and conservation.

How It's Used

“Like most of the Square Deal legislation, the final bill represented a series of compromises—increased appropriations for inspection in exchange for the removal of inconvenient requirements for enforcement.”

—Bernard Bailyn, et al., The Great Republic:  A History of the American People. Third Edition, (Lexington, Massachusetts: D.C. Heath and Co., 1985), p. 615.
