Carte Blanche

"Carte blanche," which means "white card" in French, means to give someone full powers or control.

How It's Used

“He won’t have to worry as much about diplomacy at Instant Karma, where Mr. Dickens has been given carte blanche to do things his own way.”

—Charles Goldsmith, “Music Executive Dickens Bets on Instant Karma,” The Wall Street Journal, April 24, 2000, p. B2.

“Fox offered his new employee virtual carte blanche, and the film that resulted in 1927, “Sunrise,” has been part of the history books since. It’s a self-consciously mythic “Song of Two Humans,” as its subtitle phrases it, the story of a farmer (George O’Brien) and his wife (Janet Gaynor) who are almost driven apart by a predatory character the film calls only Woman From the City (Margaret Livingston).”

—Dave Kehr, “When Titans Roamed the Backlot at Fox,” The New York Times, December 9, 2008.

“On this particular phone, however, Apple intended to make its own decisions, and so it required carte-blanche freedom to maneuver. AT&T agreed to let Apple do whatever it liked—without even knowing what the machine was going to be! AT&T was even willing to reword its voicemail system to accommodate Apple’s Visual Voicemail idea…”

—David Pogue. iPhone: The Missing Manual. 2nd Edition. (Sebastopol, CA: O’Reilly, 2008), p. 33.
