White Bread

"White Bread" is a kind of bread made from wheat flour that has had the bran and germ refined out, which leaves the finished product with a soft and smooth texture and white color, but less nutritional value.

"White Bread" can also be used as an expression to indicate that something is unexciting or plain.

How It's Used

“National retailers like the Gap who have most of their stores in malls now design their city stores in a similar way, displaying easy-to-assemble, one-size-fits-all window and floor fixtures instead of the visually complex forms once found in urban locales.  The result, Mr. Underhill laments, is that, with each such store, ‘a little bit more of the cityscape has been claimed by white bread retail style.’”

—Seth M. Siegel, “The Controlled Culture,” The Wall Street Journal, January 30, 2004, p. W9.

“Like Marquand, Mr. Gurney writes about WASPs and their discontents, and his ruefully funny studies of a ruling class in decline are too often dismissed as trivial by critics who take no interest in the inner lives of the insufficiently underprivileged. Also like Marquand, he is prolific to a fault, and his work is as unevenly inspired as it is unfailingly professional. I've reviewed several of his plays in this space, always with pleasure -- I like his best work very much -- but rarely with outright enthusiasm. Thus I'm glad to report that 'Crazy Mary,' Mr. Gurney's new portrait of life among the white-bread set, is a highly impressive piece of work, a serious comedy that succeeds in wringing honest laughs out of an awkward subject.”

—Terry Teachout, “The Lady Vanishes,” The Wall Street Journal, January 8, 2007, p. W7.
