World War II
World War II was a war fought on a global scale between 1939 and 1945 between the Axis powers—primarily Germany, Italy, and Japan—on one side and the Allied Powers—primarily China, France, Poland, the Soviet Union, the United States, and the United Kingdom—on the other. The primary regions of conflict were Europe and Eastern Asia and the Pacific Ocean. The war ended in Europe in May, 1945 and in Asia and the Pacific on September 2, 1945 with complete victory for the Allies.
Over 60 million people died in the conflict and is generally considered to be the most deadly war in history.
How It's Used
“A clue might be found in the fate of 'Letters From Iwo Jima,' the acclaimed Clint Eastwood movie from last year. Few films were more enthusiastically reviewed than the second half of Mr. Eastwood’s somber diptych about the fiercely fought battle between American and Japanese troops in the waning days of World War II.” —Charles Isherwood, “Drama: Another Casualty of War,” The New York Times, May 27, 2007. “BMW's move underscores the fierce pressure for global auto makers as the industry experiences its most dramatic downturn since World War II and at the same time faces skyrocketing costs to develop green technology to comply with stricter emission regulations.” —Christoph Rauwald, "BMW to Leave Formula 1 Racing," The Wall Street Journal, July 29, 2009. "Today is the 70th anniversary of the Russian invasion of Poland during World War II. In terms of politics, for a president allegedly obsessed with czars, his seeming capitulation to a would-be czar—Vladimir Putin—is not helpful. That's how hawks jumped on the news, breaking in European papers overnight, that the White House had decided to abandon a missile defense program first proposed by the Bush Administration in the waning months of the former president's term." —Marc Ambinder, "Why Gates and Obama Dropped the Bush Shield," The Atlantic, September 17, 2009. "Without a change, the next phase of the cycle could be catastrophic. The next banking crisis, for example, might be accompanied by a currency crisis for the U.S. dollar, which has been the linchpin of the international financial system since World War II." —Mahmound A. El-Gamal and Amy Myers Jaffe, "Subpriming the Pump: Oil wealth used to hurt only those who had it. Now, it's hurting everyone," Foreign Policy, September/October 2009, p. 101.
