How It's Used

"['Salt of the Earth'] Made at the height of McCarthyism by blacklisted left-wing artists (the director [Herbert Biberman] was jailed as one of the Hollywood Ten; screenwriter Michael Wilson's name was kept off 'Bridge on the River Kwai' and 'Lawrence of Arabia'), this politically committed movie recreates a strike by Mexican-American zinc workers against the appalling conditions at their new Mexican mine. A marvellous mixture of naivety, passion, agitprop and forceful feminism, it was the subject of official harassment during production and banned from US screens for a decade but became a cult movie for young radicals in the 1960s."

—Philip French, et al., "Lost Movie Classics: From scenes of striking Mexican zinc workers to Burt Lancaster wandering through the city in his trunks, film history is rich with neglected masterpieces that have moved, inspired and disturbed us but somehow missed the commercial boat. We asked a panel of critics and film-makers to sing the praises of 50 forgotten gems, introduced below by Philip French," The Observer (UK), December 17, 2006.

“In 1947, Mr. Trumbo, who had become a successful Hollywood screenwriter, was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee. One of the so-called Hollywood Ten, Mr. Trumbo refused to testify and was sentenced to 10 months in prison for contempt of Congress. When he was released, he was publicly blacklisted by the film industry but continued to write scripts under pseudonyms. In 1956, Robert Rich won an Academy Award for his story for 'The Brave One.' Robert Rich was Dalton Trumbo.”

—Cynthia Crossen, “The Toll of Battle,” The Wall Street Journal, July 28, 2006.

"Bacall spoke by phone from New York in anticipation of her appearance Friday narrating Aaron Copland's 'Lincoln Portrait' at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View with the San Francisco Symphony.

"She had plenty to say about the state of the nation, which is no surprise. In 1947, she accompanied husband Humphrey Bogart and other stars to Washington to protest the treatment of the Hollywood Ten by the House Un-American Activities Committee."

—Walter Addiego, "Bacall ready to take the stage in Bay Area (and speak her mind)," The San Francisco Chronicle, July 2, 2008, p. E1.

"Hollywood was a convenient target—because every time a prominent film-writer or a film star was brought before HUAC, camera bulbs flashed and the newspapers had pictures of them trying to answer the question 'Are you now or have you ever been a communist?' It was wonderful publicity for a committee made up of congressman demagogues—including Richard Milhous Nixon—whose big dream seemed to be to make the Cold War grow hot.

"This was the start of what became known as 'McCarthyism', although the evil Senator Joseph McCarthy hadn't yet gone into business running his own show in the US Senate. It captured the public mood, resulted in the Hollywood Ten, mainly writers, going to jail, and destroyed careers—and lives."

—Michael Freedland, "Hollywood calls—but only if your face fits: The film industry is being stalked by a new McCarthyism that is more dangerous for being so insidious, writes Michael Freedland," The Times (UK), July 28, 2009.

"Revered screenwriter Dalton Trumbo became one of the blacklisted 'Hollywood Ten,' went to prison and later won Oscars under pseudonyms. He returned in 1960 after producers Otto Preminger and Kirk Douglas stood up to the blacklist."

—Mike Clark, "This Week's Platinum Picks, USA Today, September 18, 2009, p. D7.
