Zero Tolerance

“Zero tolerance” is a policy that provides for the mandatory punishment of even the most minor of rule breaking. It does does not provide for any mitigating circumstances or leniency.

How It's Used

“Bishop Gregory said he expected that when the American Conference of Bishops meets in Dallas in June, it will endorse a zero-tolerance policy for all cases of priests who abuse minors from now on.”

"Zachary’s offense? Taking a Cub Scout utensil that can serve as a knife, fork and spoon to school. He was so excited about joining the Scouts that he wanted to use it at lunch. School officials concluded that he had violated their zero-tolerance policy on weapons, and Zachary now faces 45 days in the district’s reform school.

"But, based on the code of conduct for the Christina School District, where Zachary is a first grader, school officials had no choice. They had to suspend him because, 'regardless of possessor’s intent,' knives are banned. But the question on the minds of residents here is: Why do school officials not have more discretion in such cases?"

"New York City's crackdown on panhandling began under former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, when 'zero-tolerance' policing was instituted to curb quality-of-life offenses. Panhandling, public drinking, public urinating, graffiti and disorderly conduct were all part of the crackdown as a way to bring order to the city by sending the message that no crime would be tolerated."

"The shuttle's maintenance hangar is a restricted zone, requiring special access badges for any workers, Beutel said. About 200 NASA employees and contractors have access to the area, and drug tests for all of them have been under way since Wednesday. However, the agency said Thursday that there have been no indications of anyone working on the premises while under the influence of an illegal substance.

"The consequences of such actions are severe, NASA officials said. 'NASA, as well as all of our contractors, has a zero-tolerance policy for illegal drug use,' Beutel said. 'This is being taken very seriously.'"
