All Whites

The All Whites is the nickname for the New Zealand national association football (soccer) team.

How It's Used

"Keith Pritchett: Liked what he saw when he toured New Zealand with Watford in 1982 and emigrated there, coaching Waitakere City. Became team manager of the national side, the All Whites, in 1996. He is now the director of football with the District Federation of New Zealand Soccer in Auckland."

—Barry Flatman, "Rocket Man to the rescue; Caught in time," The Sunday Times (UK), November 30, 2008.

"Tonight, Bojic could do his Socceroos chances no harm by keeping prolific All Whites striker Shane Smeltz quiet, especially given the striker's blistering recent form for the Phoenix."

—Sebastian Hassett, "Bojic wants call-up for Christmas," The Sydney Morning Herald, December 19, 2008.

"New Zealand coach Ricki Herbert has given glowing praise to the A-League as his national team faces its biggest match in 27 years against Bahrain in two weeks.

"Herbert, who played at the World Cup in Spain in 1982 with the All Whites, is just 90 minutes away from taking his country to football's Holy Grail—this time as coach—if New Zealand can overcome Bahrain in the second leg of the World Cup qualifier at a sellout Westpac Stadium in Wellington on November 14."

—John Taylor, "Kiwis join A-list—Aussie league boosts World Cup hopes," The Daily Telegraph, October 30, 2009.

"Man-of-the-moment Rory Fallon walked into the post-match media conference after New Zealand's epic World Cup win over Bahrain proudly wearing a T-shirt proclaiming: 'White is the New Black.'

"Not one of the 35,194 fans—apart, maybe, from the small group of Bahraini supporters who had long gone, would have disagreed.

"In front of a sea of white, the All Whites came up trumps. In the world's greatest sporting arena, a soccer team outstaged the national rugby team who, a short time later, scored their ever-predictable win in Milan."

—Terry Maddaford, "Fallon delivers one shot for glory," The New Zealand Herald, November 16, 2009.

"The All Whites are eyeing a friendly against China or Australia early next year but it will be their only opportunity to get together before they go into camp for the June-July World Cup in South Africa.

"In the aftermath of Saturday's stunning 1-0 win in the Asia-Oceania playoff against Bahrain at Westpac Stadium, captain Ryan Nelsen made an impassioned plea to the national body for more games as the All Whites eye a date with destiny on world sport's biggest stage—the football World Cup."

—Fred Woodcock, "Please sirs, can we have some more?" The Dominion Post, November 16, 2009.
