Seven-Layer Dip

Seven-layer dip is a snack dip served with tortilla chips as an appetizer in the United States.

As is so often the case with numbered lists like this, there is no definitive list of the seven ingredients in Seven-Layer Dip. All recipes call for at least:

  1. Refried beans
  2. Guacamole
  3. Sour cream
  4. A spicy sauce, usually salsa, but possibly pico de gallo or simply chopped tomatoes
  5. Shredded cheese, usually Cheddar, but possibly Monterey Jack cheese or a blend of both

Other ingredients can include:

  1. Black olives
  2. Cooked Ground beef
  3. Jalapeño chiles
  4. Shredded lettuce
  5. Tortilla chips

How It's Used

“I tucked into D.J. Taylor's Kept: A Victorian Mystery hoping that it would get my summer reading off to a good start—it's not so easy to find fiction that goes with margaritas but doesn't turn your brain to seven-layer bean dip. And, indeed, Mr. Taylor keeps both the pages and the brain turning over pleasantly.”

—Alexandra Mullen, “Bookmarks,” The Wall Street Journal, June 15, 2007, p. W6.
