AA (Alcoholics Anonymous)

"AA" is the abbreviation for Alcoholics Anonymous, a twelve-step, self-help program with support groups around the world for people with problems with alcohol-abuse.

How It's Used

“All of this nonsense [in the television show 'The Cupcake Girls'] is precariously joined to moments of human seriousness. Lori comes to tears after a frustrating visit to her fertility specialist. Heather has to skip an AA meeting. Cadence—their star employee despite the fact that she does a subpar job of Windexing the display case and openly rebels against wearing a hairnet—is transgendered and discusses with some gravity her difficulties as she proceeds through various surgeries.”

—Troy Patterson, “Against Cupcakes: The yipping lap dog of baked goods inspires three new shows,” Slate, August 12, 2010.

"But it didn’t take long for Mr. [Gordon] Murray to become a true believer in this different way of investing. 'I learned more through Dan [Goldie] and Dimensional [Fund Advisors] in a year than I did in 25 years on Wall Street,' he said.

"Soon Dimensional hired him as a consultant, helping financial advisers who use its funds explain the company’s anti-Wall Street investment philosophy to its clients. 'The most inspirational people who talk about alcoholism are people who have gone through A.A.,' said David Booth, Dimensional’s founder and chairman. 'It’s the people who have had the experience and now see the light who are our biggest advocates.'"

Ron Lieber, "A Dying Banker’s Last Instructions," The New York Times, November 27, 2010.
