First-Run Syndication

How It's Used

"The segment of the program market most exposed to this distress is 'first-run syndication,' shows that haven't previously aired on a network, like 'The Oprah Winfrey Show,' 'Dr. Phil,' 'Wheel of Fortune,' 'Inside Edition' and 'Jeopardy.' Shows in the first-run market are sold almost exclusively to broadcast stations, unlike network reruns, which are often sold to more-stable cable channels."

—Martin Peers, "Serial Trouble for CBS at TV Stations," The Wall Street Journal, 15 Jul 09.
