The 21 Club

How It's Used

“Suddenly, Royals fans did not want to hear any more about 1985. You can’t blame folks. Bringing up 1985 to Royals fans now is more or less like going up to a busted millionaire during the Depression and reminding him how good the food was at the 21 Club.”

—Joe Posnanski, “Good Time to Recall Mr. K,” The Kansas City Star, 27 Oct 05.

"Some well-heeled regulars ate at ''21'' almost every day for 50 years, and the ever-present Mr. Berns helped make the club a tradition through generations. Couples celebrated the birth of a child by stocking wine to be opened when the newborn turned 21. The consummation of a business deal or a love affair was a cause for a table for two."

—Tim Weiner, "Jerry Berns, '21' Club's Pre-eminent Greeter, Is Dead at 99," The New York Times, 22 Dec 06.

“Three weeks later, Mr. Husseini flew to New York at the invitation of a clutch of high-powered financiers, including Mr. Soros, Leucadia National Corp. Chairman Ian M. Cumming and Aubrey McClendon, the chief executive of natural-gas company Chesapeake Energy Corp. “The group of about 20 met for dinner in the 21 Club's wine cellar. Mr. Husseini declines to comment on the session. One guest says he spoke mainly about the geopolitical thunderclouds hovering over the oil market, especially the U.S. and Israeli standoff with Iran."

—Neil King, Jr., "Global Oil-Supply Worries Fuel Debate in Saudi Arabia: Former Officials at Odds Over 'Peak' Theory; Crude Hits High," The Wall Street Journal, 27 Jun 08.

"Stone spends most of his time in Miami these days, but he’s still greeted warmly by the staff at the '21' Club, the venerable former speakeasy on West Fifty-second Street. 'I love it here,' Stone said, as we settled into a corner table. 'It’s like time stopped in about 1975 in here—my kind of place.' What appeals to Stone is not just the red-meat-and-red-wine gastronomy but also the jackets-required formality."

—Jeffrey Toobin, "The Dirty Trickster: Campaign tips from the man who has done it all," The New Yorker, 2 Jun 08.
