Famous Duels

Perhaps the most famous duel ever was between David and Goliath ^[1] in which David defeats the much larger Goliath with a stone slung from a slingshot. Other famous duels include those between:

Alexander Hamilton ^[2], the former Secretary of the Treasury, and Aaron Burr ^[3], then the Vice President of the United States, in 1804 in which Burr mortally wounded ^[4] Hamilton; and
Alexander Pushkin ^[5], the great Russian writer, and Georges d’Anthès ^[6], a French nobleman, in 1837 in which d’Anthès mortally wounded Pushkin, who was only 37.

While today, dueling no longer exists in our society we do have boxing which has had it share of famous “duels” over the years, such as:

Joe Louis versus Max Schmeling; ^[7]
Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier in the “Fight of the Century ^[8]” and the “Thrilla in Manila ^[9]“; and
Muhammad Ali vs. George Forman in the “Rumble in the Jungle ^[10]“.

In addition to physical combat, there have also been famous duels of intellect in political debates, such as:

Abraham Lincoln, future president of the United States, and Steven Douglas, senator from Illinois ^[11], in 1858 for Douglas’s Senate seat; and
Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy ^[12] in 1960 for the presidency of the United States.
